Double Life?

August 30, 2009 4 comments

As a Disney fan(atic), I wrestle from time to time with my “obsession”, as some might call it. On the one hand, I appear to be a pretty normal (IMHO), guy, father, husband, co-worker. But on the other hand, I live almost a secret life where I go to numerous Disney-related web-sites, post on discussion boards at those sites, listen to multiple podcasts relating to Disney, read books about Disney, search auctions for Disney merchandise, etc, etc. Maybe you can identify.

When I created this blog, I started looking at ways in which I could increase traffic and get people interested. One of my first thoughts was to post something on Facebook. My thought was, I’ve got a few friends on there, and it might generate some traffic quickly. But then fear set in and I started thinking, what will my friends say who don’t know about my “obsession”? I mean, a lot of them don’t know me as GrumpyFan, so they’ll ask, is that you? If people found out who I really was, and that I spend as much time as I do on Disney-related stuff, what would they say? Would I or am I embarrassed about it? To some people, yeah, sadly I kinda am. But, maybe that’s just my own insecurity. Or, maybe it’s my realization that I DO spend too much time thinking about, reading,  listening to and writing about Disney-related stuff. NAH!

Many people who know  my wife and I,  know that we are Disney “fans”, simply because we go to Disney almost everytime we leave the state. But I don’t really think they know how deep that fandom runs, especially in me. What’s interesting is many people who know us, including my Mother in-law, think it’s my wife who is the fanatic or as they say, obsessed. She doesn’t always appreciate that label though. She doesn’t spend near half the time reading message boards and books and listening to podcasts, as I do. No, she’s the planner, and is always looking for a way to get us back to Walt Disney World by watching for specials, re-arranging our budget, or working extra jobs to pay for another trip. Me, on the other hand, I’m just sitting quietly listening, reading, and of course agreeing with her plan. So, while my wife gets labeled as the “fanatic” or “Disney obsessed”, I’m really the one who is. After all, I’m the one with the blog, not her,  at least not yet.

All of this makes me think of Jeff Foxworthy’s famous, “You might be a redneck if…” schtick, only changed a little to apply to Disney.

You might be a Disney fanatic if:

  • You visit more than one Disney-related web-site in a week
  • You listen to more than one podcast about Disney in a week
  • You count the days between your Disney trips
  • You know or have seen all, or most all of the movies, including Pixar
  • You own all, or most all of the movies, including Pixar
  • You find yourself quoting Disney movies a lot
  • People come to you asking about how to plan their Disney vacation
  • Anybody has ever said to you, “You’re going to Disney again?”
  • You know who the fab 5 are
  • You know the opening date of any or all the parks
  • You know the difference between Disney World, and Disneyland and get annoyed at people who don’t
  • You know Walt’s birthday and/or the day he died
  • You know that Mickey was not the first animated character Walt drew
  • You know what a “Hidden Mickey” is, and where to find many of the
  • You watch The Disney Channel, or Disney XD (and you’re an adult)
  • You have to go to The Disney Store everytime you go to the mall
  • You find yourself constantly looking for hidden Mickey’s
  • You have multiple clothing items with Mickey or other Disney characters, and you wear them frequently

I’m sure there are a lot more of these, but for the record, I think I can identify with all of them, so I guess I AM a Disney Fanatic. But, I’m okay with it, however, I’m just not sure if I want ALL of my close friends to know it. At least not  just yet.

Maybe you’re reading this and laughing, maybe not. Maybe you’re reading it and nodding your head in agreement, because you too are hiding your true Disney fanaticism like me for fear of what your friends and family might say. If so, chime in, I’d like to hear from you. Or, if not, please feel free to chime in and tell me I’m being silly, and how you’ve revealed your Disney fanaticism and you, your friends and your family are okay with it. Either way, I’d be happy to hear from you.
