The Santa Clause 4: The Substitute Clause

Note: If you’ve arrived here looking for information about Disney’s, The Santa Clause 4, I’m sorry to disappoint,  but  I have no such news. However, I would like to ask that you at least give your opinion of a 4th movie by voting in the poll I have created. To date, this page has been searched for and viewed over 95,000 times!  Hopefully, with enough votes, maybe someday someone from Disney Studios will see this and choose to make another movie. So, whether you like or even read my concept below for a fourth movie, please vote.

Disney’s, The Santa Clause  are some of mine and my family’s favorite movies. My daughter and I were talking recently about the second one and a thought crossed my mind that I believe would make for a good premise for at least one more movie. It’s a story that seems to have been hinted at in the previous movies. Charlie, Scott Calvin’s son, seems to have a real interest and affection for the role of Santa in the movies, so, why not give him a shot at it.

In my idea for this 4th version of the popular movies, it opens right before Thanksgiving with Santa (Scott Calvin) appearing before the Council of Legendary Figures (Mother Nature, Father Time, Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, Cupid and Sandman). Apparently, he’s been sued by the elves union or Jack Frost  or somebody else, it really doesn’t matter too much. The point is, he’s grounded and cannot perform his duties this year as Santa, or until the Council has had time to adequately investigate and rule on the matter.

Given that Tim Allen has (allegedly) expressed that he’s not interested in doing another one of these movies, this story line might could work without him, or at the least with his role being minor. If he refused to do the movie, it might be nice if they could bring back David Krumholtz, who played the part of Bernard, the head elf in the first two movies. The story would be that he’s now head legal counsel for Santa and speaks on his behalf. Bernard would come and find Charlie and explain to him that his dad has been barred from flying and being Santa for this year. However, there is a clause on the original card, that allows for a substitute Santa, but that person must be a relative. So, in an effort to save Christmas and quite possibly his Dad, Bernard tries to get Charlie to agree to fill the suit for this year and be Santa.

Only, there are problems with Charlie being Santa. Number one being, he’s finishing his last year of college and getting ready to graduate. He already has numerous time constraints and really can’t work it in to his schedule. However, he agrees to do it for his dad and to save Christmas. Soon after the fun begins. Much like in the first movie where physical changes began happening as Christmas approaches, Charlie will experience similar changes. The fun twist to the story occurs in the fact that Charlie is in college. Of course, being in college, none of his peers nor his professors believe in such a childish thing as Santa Claus. Especially sour on the Santa belief is his roommate who apparently had a pretty bad experience as a young kid.

Along the way, Charlie manages to re-ignite the belief in Santa and the joy of Christmas for his roommate and at least a couple of his professors. Either thru an accident or some kind of interference by Jack Frost (or someone else), Charlie winds up stuck somewhere and has to call on someone to help. As it turns out, his roommate is the only one who can help, and in the process discovers that Charlie is in fact Santa Claus. In the end, Charlie saves Christmas, as well as vindicates his Dad from the charges that were filed against him.

I’ll be the first to admit it’s not the strongest story, and the fact that it moves away from the actor/character that made it such an enjoyable movie for the first three weakens it substantially. In fact, I almost cringe at the thought of a sequel that doesn’t use the original actor. Thoughts immediately come to mind of poor sequels with a replacement actor like Daddy Day Camp where Eddie Murphy’s character was played by Cuba Gooding Jr, or Dr Doolittle 3, a film based on another Eddie Murphy movie, only it has a similar premise as what I’m proposing where the character’s child is taking on the lead role. However, in spite of these other poor movies, the Dr Doolittle series must have appealed to someone because they made 3 of them without Eddie Murphy, which means somebody bought them. So, I think if done well, another Santa Clause movie, even without Tim Allen could do reasonably well if they were to incorporate the same magic and fun of the original movies. Besides that, it’s a Christmas movie which means it is going to have a mass appeal that sometimes can drive sales for many years. If nothing else, the story could work at least for a direct to video or maybe TV special.

One thing they didn’t tell us is if Tim’s (Scott Calvin) parents know the SOS. He’s already told his in law’s so why not his own parents and brothers/sisters ( if he has any alive). In addition, with Peter Boyle gone they could play off a line in the second movie to recast Father Time. Cupid said ‘if my arrows worked on Legendary Figures, I’d have left years ago.’ They could write in that Father Time decided to retire or something and another person was found to take the job.

I kinda had the idea that Charlie visitso from college or something and ends up cownecdentally ends up wearing a similar red coat. He hangs it up near his dad’s and acidentaly puts the Santa coat on and becomes Santa. Now aa for a villa I’m not sure yet maybe bring a new.character in like baby knew year? Or something like that Idk but yeah…..

i love the santa clause movies and watch them a lot during the year.
they are timeless and wonderful. Tim needs to remember that he
is this franchise and to a lot of kids he is Santa. sometimes you
have to remember where you came from and what you gained, everything is Not about money, and the Clause franchise does will there too. cmon tim.

I Loved The Santa Clause movies 1,2 and 3 was ok because I loved Jack Frost. So funny,(scene:Jack Frost nipping at your nose LOL!!!). However I was very disappointed that David Krumholtz (Benard the Elf) wasn’t in the third flim! The movie wasn’t good without him. He was a huge icon in the flms, when you think of The Santa Clause you think Think Tim Allen & David Krumholtz.I love the idea of introducing Buddy to the flim.I hope they come up with one last movie at least to intro. Buddy or and maybe Rudolph the Red nose Deer.So one Last time The Santa Clause 4 For Tim & David!!

  16. March 26, 2014 at 5:23 pm

I like the idea you came up with and substituting Neil in there, as suggested in another post, could also be fun. Too bad Tim Allen isn’t interested anymore. As an aside, I wasn’t real excited about the third movie because of the contrived conflict. I enjoy seeing Scott work through tough situations and his humor is a wonderful thing. Unfortunately, deceit and trickery wouldn’t have been my first choice for a Christmas theme. If Tim would reconsider it would be nice to have an installment where Scott is becoming disenchanted or, perhaps, distracted with the administrative part of being the CEO of the Christmas machine. Since everyone really loves Scott and can sense this change Bernard approaches Ms. Clause and they work out a plan. They both know deep down how much Scott truly loves being Santa and they want to bring that out in him again. They work out a plan with Father Time to send Scott back in time to help the original Santa Clause who will have already been approached by Father Time about the situation. The original Santa tells Scott he will not be able to distribute his gifts because of ill health (or some other unfortunate reason). In the process a plot can be described where Scott and the audience gains a much deeper appreciation for the origins of Christmas and the spiritually healing aspect of giving. How acts of kindness expressed through the placement of small gifts made huge differences in the lifes of people back then. In the end he comes away with a renewed vigor and understanding of the heritage behind the mantle he now wears. He returns with no elapsed time having been lost and gives a speech to the elves telling them that although they probably hadn’t noticed he had begun to loose sight of the importance of his and their jobs and for that he needs to apologize. He then boards his sleigh and flying across the backdrop of the moon says, “Merry Christmas to all.” That just seems so much nicer than the power struggle at the North Pole delivered in installment 3; but that’s just me.

I think they should make another Santa Clause because if Santas son cant be Santa then maybe Neil can be. I know it may sound dumb but it may work out if this movie will ever happen?

  28. December 15, 2013 at 9:58 am

Tim Allen is a great actor so i think he should be the Santa Clause in a 5th or 6th movie. plus i don’t think Buddy would be a very good Santa Clause because Disney might pick some dumb actor for him.

  29. December 15, 2013 at 9:53 am

The Santa Clause 4 is a great idea. I’ve been watching it since i was in the 1st grade so Disney will have to hurry up with this movie. I think the Calvin family shall have a genaration where each of there son’s should be Santa Clause like Scott was Santa so Charlie should be him than Buddy

It’s another year coming to an end, and Christmas is in jeopardy. Society is struggling with the coldest and longest winter ever recorded. Environmentalists are blaming the extreme cold on excessive carbon emissions, leading to one of the years strongest blizzards throughout the entire world. Are Scientists correct? Unfortunately no. Although Jack Frost managed to find his heart after a warm loving hug a few years back, Jack still retains bitterness in his heart. And while he knows he cannot replace Santa Clause with his own selfish ideas, he can make Santa’s job very difficult with extreme cold temperatures and blizzards limiting visibility. Mother nature cannot battle Jack Frost for global tolerance with warm summers along with Jacks attempt to eliminate summers all together.

But that’s not the only problem. Now Santa (Tim Allen) has grown very weary, exhausted, and developed a strong case of pneumonia. Sadly, because Christmas is so close, and the weather extremely horrible for delivering toys for the kids, Santa is actually thinking of cancelling Christmas. It was the Year Without a Santa Clause, that almost was…

Behind the scenes, a new rain deer born from a birth defect. The extreme cold in conjunction with radioactive phenomena left a young deer with a very strange image. A bright and shiny nose that glowed so bright and red that could be seen for miles. The other rain deer, especially a silly immature deer named Chet, picked on him and the others joined in the fun. Who am I talking about? None other than good ole Rudolph; the red nosed rain deer.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Clause (Elizabeth Mitchell) is having to nurse Santa back to health. But poor old Santa is not feeling well at all. He’s avoiding his favorite cookies and delicious hot chocolate and just doesn’t have the strength for Christmas this year. What about Charlie? Well, as he grew older, he still believes in Christmas, but has somewhat outgrown it. Besides, he’s in college and spending much of his young adult life building a future career in management. Charlie believes that his management skills will be required to eventually take over the “Family Business” at the North Pole. But there’s Lucy. How could she help? Could Lucy give Jack another warm loving hug to stop this years coldest blizzard in history? Unfortunately, no. Jack has denied any access or confrontation with the powerful and loving Lucy.

Will Christmas be cancelled this year? Looks like Mrs. Clause and Lucy have their work cut out for them. Curtis will have to manage toy production entirely on his own while Santa tries to recover. But Mrs. Clause and Lucy embark on a mission to stop jack frost from destroying Christmas. Who will they find help from? What about the “Heat Miser”? Perhaps. Heat Miser can team up with mother nature and help thwart Jacks mission to stop Christmas. But something entirely different helps bring Jack down. Not another hug from Lucy. But this time, Mrs. Clause, who is very experienced in bitterness, shows Jack the same warmth and love that changed her once cynical attitude about Christmas, to one of embracing it even more (I’ll leave this up to Disney to fill in the blank). Mrs. Clause brings Jack back to his loving childhood, and helps him overcome his bitterness towards Christmas, and his desire to upstage his place and role in Christmas. Mrs. Clause and Lucy both save the day. Unfortunately, it’s almost too late.

Santa is a little better, thanks to Curtis and the Elf’s nursing him back to health. However, Santa still weak and uncertain if the toys can be delivered this year. After all, it’s just too cold and seeing is almost impossible. But what’s this? Where is that beautiful light coming from? “What in the world!!! That light….that light….Why, Rudolph with your nose so bright, would you help me guide my sleigh tonight?”

Mrs. Clause and Lucy were able to thwart Jacks Plan. Unfortunately, Jack is unable to clear out the blizzard and extreme cold. Santa will have to deliver the toys in this weather. But a new rain deer comes to the rescue. Rudolph, leading the way, helps Santa save Christmas….the year without a Santa Clause.

There definately needs to be a Santa Clause 4 with Tim Allen, and Elizabeth Mitchell. I love the story ideas being presented. But I’d like to add one very special character that seems to have slipped out of Christmas these past few years. Has everyone forgotten about Rudolph the red nose rain deer? He wouldn’t be the main character but certainly much better than a young deer name Chet.

Maybe Curtis and Bernard can tell Scott that is time as Santa and he needs to pass it down to Charlie and Buddy will be Charlie’s head elf until Buddy reaches of age and Scott having no choice calls Charlie using Magic and Charlie arrives at the pole via Magic and he explains to Charlie that is time as Santa is over and Charlie and buddy will take over as Santa and head elf respectively until Charlie passes it down to Buddy and Charlie agrees then he is sprayed with Magic Dust and is told the Santafication will begin in a few months and scott is revert back to his old self before Santa and he and his wife carol depart from the pole as they leave Charlie and buddy in charge and Curtis and Bernard pass down the head elf status to Buddy until he becomes Santa and with that Charlie begins his work as Santa but he remembered he is working at Lenny’s Advertising agency and he will continue until the sanctification process begins and he has begin his yearly santa duites at the pole checking the list and checking on the elves making the toys and Buddy is very more fun as the head elf he encourages the elves to their best

I come back here every few months to see what is going on and I see more and more GOOD IDEAS coming from people that love these movies like I do and WE WANT MORE! We have all come up with enough stuff that a screenwriter would have no problem culling out the best ideas and pulling them together in one script!

Come on Disney! We want more and we are all willing to help write the script for you! All you need do is get the entire ruddy ball rolling on it! I would be willing to say that with so many of us here that dearly love the first three movies, you would find a flipping mess of people that have NEVER quit believing in Father Christmas!

To those here that still believe, you may add me to that list! I may be 56, but my heart and soul are STILL 12 years old! I may have to grow old, BUT I WILL NEVER GROW UP! I REFUSE TO DO THAT! So take it from an OVERGROWN CHILD! I WANT MORE!

    Lady, Donna Royce

  43. August 31, 2013 at 4:11 pm

I would like to see Bernard back and this would be a great place to put him in. My opinion is maybe his wife is feeling lonely and wants to spend more time with her husband and maybe cooks up a plan with Jack Frost so Scott will be home more and maybe Lucy Scott’s first wife’s daughter from her second husband could be back in the movie and at the North Pole helping Santa’s wife with their child. Buddy is now like 4 or 5 and is a handful since Scott is never home and always at the workshop. No wonder Mrs. Claus is determined to get Scott home for a while.

Another scenario is while Santa can not fly for a year maybe Scott’s first wife Charlie’s mother is pregnant and going to have a baby any day and while he is off for a year and Charlie is taking over Santa’s absence could be explained by They went to be with Charlie’s mom and step dad to help her with the baby and it turned out she had twins or triplets and needed a few extra hands.

A third idea is Scott is overworked after being Santa for so long and his work is not as great as it should be and the elves are striking because Santa is not so Jolly and has a bad attitude because he is working all the time and never sees his wife and son and his job is suffering because he is putting in so many hours and needs rest so he is not checking the toys like he should be and with the bad attitude and sloppy work he is on probation

You know what folks? I THINK WE ARE ALL BLOODY WELL WRITING THIS MOVIE AS WE GO ALONG HERE! I see so many good ideas here that all a screenwriter need do is outline it and then come to this page and just take all of our ideas, incorparate them into the screenplay and just work up the dialog and She/He would be done in a week rather then several months! THAT IS HOW GOOD SOME OF THESE IDEAS ARE!

Who wants to come get me and then we can go present this idea to Disney?

Thanks! I really need to get back to this and put something together. This month alone, this page has been viewed more than 16,000 times! It seems pretty obvious to me that many would love to see another movie in this franchise.
I too thought about the possibility of trying to bring back Bernard, but the actor (David Krumholtz) seems to have moved on and I’m not sure if he would necessarily fit the look anymore. According to Wikipedia, he wasn’t in the third one due to contract dispute.

In the original, the card read, by accident or design, it should be written into the script that charlie was the design all along and his dad, unknowingly, has been training him all along on how to be a great santa. Eric Loyd and Tim Allen has to both make it work. We all need another Santa Clause movie. dump the college angle and go in another direction. This time and place in our country could sure use more magic.

I like this story line very much, with one exception. I think that, instead of Charlie getting help from his college roommate, he should get help from his college crush/sweetheart! Or maybe both! Just a thought. 🙂

that would be so funny…just see it for you eyes half santa charlie has some really much explaing to do to his girlfriend who had alreay some suspions in the second film about his dad.:) would really fit

I think this person is on to something! And by the reaction, on here, a lot of people think so too….and would go see it, including me! We NEED more movies like this! Family movies!! And if you have a great movie, that works THREE times…then that has to tell ya something…people want more. I say try to make a new one, every 2 years or so, that follows this line, with these characters….why??? ’cause just about everyone loves and needs them!! When it FAILS at the box office….then it’s time to STOP. That is NOT happening. If you are an actor, and really want to make people happy….then you should consider what makes THEM happy, and if you can…….do it!!! Love Tim Allen and all the characters from these movies! We ALL do!!!!

I’m not sure about every 2 years or so. But, if they have a good story, then why not make a sequel or two or three, but care must be exercised so as not to burn out the audience. I mean, let’s face it, after a while the same characters doing the same things over and over get old.

I love the entire idea but one. Change the law suit to some other problem that will keep Father Christmas out of action for that year.
Say his father in law Bud passes away and on the way to where he stashed the sled & the boys to head back to the pole, He & Mother Christmas gets hit head on crash (There is a new Jack Frost & he makes the old one look tame & he has iced up the road HEAVY just to make trouble & did not know (RIGHT! So he says!) Father Christmas was on that very road heading home!) in their rented car & He ends up in hospital in a minor coma & Mother Christmas will not leave his side to go get Charlie.

So Mother Nature goes to tell Charlie that according to the rules, he has to cover for his Father till he is up & around again & she has a bit of trouble convincing him of this untill she takes that fateful card & makes it enlarge to cover the whole wall of the gym or some other HUGE wall so they both can see this hidden rule! (YES! The print is that tiny!)

Then as you set out above, the trouble & the fun starts! Charlie showed he was good at dealing with problems in a pinch in 2 & 3 & he is really put to the test here!
I think that the same young man that played Charlie would need to play the part again.

With Father Christmas confined to a bed in hospital, you would not even need Mr. Allen to be involved but for the opening part with the wreck and the end where he wakes up a couple of moments after Charlie gets there to report to his step-mother & Mother Nature.
Any parts after that where we would just need to see him in bed, it could be a puppet made in the same way as the one of “Bella” was made for “Twilight: Breaking Dawn: Part 1” & that thing was so life like that it was shocking!

So……There you have it. A few improvements to your idea but for the most part, the same idea you had. I would love to see another “Santa Clause” movie. BLOODY HELL! I would love to be involved with it. Perhaps a walk on at the pole?
Mum always said she thought I was in the wrong place & time.
I have been fixing (Grandmum taught me how.) & collecting toys since I was eight years old. Mum said, “Baby, you are in the wrong place!”
“You should have been with Father Christmas. Building toys & then going around the world, collecting broken & neglected toys, fixing them up better then new & getting them to children that need a very special friend! A toy so special that no other child would have it!”

I hope you like my changes.

Happy Christmas and may The Mother watch over you and yours.

Your idea involving Charlie being the “subsititute” Santa is terrific!!! What a great plot!! I think however, no law suits. Perhaps with the birth of Santa’s son at the end of #3, maybe there is an illness/crisis with him or Mrs. Clause and Santa calls on Charlie to fill in. The rest of your ideas are great. This brings back Tim Allen with a limited role, a compromise between no movie and a full Santa role and keeps the original Santa and the flow of the movies. I hope someone pays attention and picks this idea for “The Santa Clause 4, The Subsitute Clause”. I for one would love to read more!!

I happened to stumble on the site and I personally think it’s a great storyline. I loved the first one and I think the fourth movie should reflect the stylings of it which can be done. In the first movie, Charlie mentions that he wants to go into the family business. Buddy would already be around Charlie’s age when it all started. Besides what Santa is teaching Buddy already, Charlie can teach Buddy and the movie can show their relationship. When the time is right, Charlie can pass the torch. You can always incorporate Lucy as the girl who melts peoples hearts or show the relationship between the three as Charlie is prepping to become Santa. They are siblings so you can show the love they have yet how they are all different. Tim Allen can make a cameos as well as all of the adults. The kids can make their parents proud. Oh yeah, Charlie did have a highschool sweetheart so she can be incorporated as well. I am sorry my mind is working overtime in helping getting this story off the ground. What would make it funny is to add manly sense of humor you know like Tim Allen’s show but it does not have to be crude. Let me tell you, the fourth movie could retire Tim Allen all together and would leave kids now with a new generation. Great idea! Oh yeah and from what I learned about scripts is that they have to be typed in ariel 10 font. One minute, if I remember correctly, for every page.

Bring back santa clause! I think Tim Allen should still be in it… maybe busy with the baby and helping the new mama…I miss Tim Allen, he needs to be in it, its crucial! It has always been my favorite Christmas series and remain that way. I watch it more then often! Love it.. BRING IT BACK!

How about, Scott Calvin is cursed in getting even fatter as Santa Claus and could explode because of some wierd expiration date age limit for the title as Santa unless he passes the torch of Santa to either Chalie or Buddy or something. XP

I like this idea. Especially if Eric Lloyd would still play Charlie. My favorite movie of the Santa clause’s is the second one because of Charlie. He is older and has a different type of part in it. 🙂

      November 29, 2011 at 12:01 pm

Indeed, Eric (Charlie) would be crucial in my story. I would assume that he would be up for it, however, it might need some additional actors to beef up the story since he’s not the best know actor. He hasn’t done a lot since SC3, but according to IMDB, does appear to still be working.

I continue to think about this story, and keep adding new thoughts on the story line. Maybe one day I will get around to publishing a full blown story on it, or at the least a more detailed plot summary. I should add too, that this post continues to be one of my most viewed with over 9,600 views since posting in 2010, and 3,400 just in the last 30 days. Oh how I would love to see this play out on the big screen!

That is why I suggested that Buddy and Charlie fight to be Santa. Tim Allen does not want to do this anymore. By doing a 4th film and passing the torch to one of the boys, then the films can continue.

Eric Loyd was pretty good. But I think that a decent buddy can brought into this. Basically, let them battle it out, and have one winner and the other join up with him to help.

        November 29, 2011 at 4:29 pm

Sorry, but I just can’t see how that would work in my story. The thought was to stay closely within the timeline of the previous movies, which would basically leave off a few years after the third movie, and Charlie would be finishing college. This would mean that Buddy would only be 4 or 5 years old, and in my opinion, not necessarily ready to play the part of an adult Santa. I do think, however, that the character should play a part in the story, I’m just not sure exactly how. I will have to give it some thought.

  74. November 15, 2011 at 9:46 am

this time in the forth movie they should bring back the people that do not believe in the santa clause like for an example the guy in the first when he said scoott calvin you are no longer to visit charlie no more he should come back and this time he ends up beliveing in santa and do not forget about scott calvin’s co workers that threw santa in jail in the first and hey where in the heck is lucy she was in the 2nd and the 3rd she should come back this time if frost is doing something bad like in the 3rd and he kept blaming the elves even the tree topper scene in the 3rd it was not santas fault for breaking the star it was frostest falut cause he lossen up the tree so it could be unstable and that is why the tree topper broke cause santa did not know the tree was not stable and i got to say i am 21 and i believe in santa and i do not care what everyone thinks about me of watching these kind of movie if you have brothers and sister s that make fun you just tell this you believe santa and i am watching these movies so why you cannot believe in santa and stand up and what you believe in and watch these movies cause they are great watch in the month of november cause that is when the countdown to 25 days of christmas movies start on november ok so go for it

Sorry, but not a fan of the lawsuit. Far too many of those now. Instead, how about Calvin wants to retire and leave it to one of his 2 boys. The problem is, that they BOTH want it. So, the question is, who get it? Charlie, or the later boy that was born? That is the story. And can leave the line open for a whole new set of stories. This is also a better exit for Tim Allen then the SC 3 was.

BTW, after reading the rest of your story, I think that you should consider doing the modification and taking alex up on his suggestion. He is right that a good story COULD win back Allen.
